East London Mosque Promotes Hitler Apologist (again…)

East London Mosque Promotes Hitler Apologist (again…)

On 23rd March, the East London Mosque and the Islamic Forum of Europe have organised an event: ‘In Pursuit of the Middle Way: An Audience with Yasir Qadhi’. The East London Mosque persistently claims to reject extremist thought and denies providing a platform to extremist speakers. Its star guest, Yasir Qadhi, however, is a notorious hate preacher and Holocaust denier.

A graduate of the University of Medina, Qadhi has been widely condemned for his hateful views on Jews. In 2001, Qadhi gave a lecture in which he said:

“All of these Polish Jews which Hitler was supposedly trying to exterminate, that’s another point, by the way, Hitler never intended to mass-destroy the Jews. There are a number of books out on this written by Christians, you should read them. The Hoax of the Holocaust, I advise you to read this book and write this down, the Hoax of the Holocaust, a very good book. All of this is false propaganda and I know it sounds so far-fetched, but read it. The evidences [sic] are very strong. And they’re talking about newspaper articles, clippings, everything and look up yourself what Hitler really wanted to do. We’re not defending Hitler, by the way, but the Jews, the way that they portray him, also is not correct.”

Qadhi further claimed that:

“You go to America, you find that 95% of the Islamic Studies professors are Jews, you know that? 95% of Islamic Studies are Jews. And 0% of Judaic Studies are Muslims. I am not advising any Muslim to waste his time studying Judaism but I’m saying, why are Jews studying Islam? There is a reason, not that they want to help us, they want to destroy us … they want to bring about doubts, look at the doubts that exist, look at the divisions, the discord, look at the disunity, look at all these ideologies that are being spread. Know that the Yahood [Jews] and the Kuffar [Infidels] like this type of thing.”

Qadhi has also denounced Shia Islam as “the most lying sect of Islam” and has said that “the Shias are allowed to lie and it is their religion to lie.”

In 2008, Qadhi claimed to have recanted his extremist views. Around the same time, however, Qadhi expressed support for the Holocaust denier David Irving.

Indeed, these days, Qadhi is the Dean of Academic Affairs at the Al Maghrib Institute, where his colleagues include notorious hate preachers such as Said Rageah, a Canadian Islamist preacher who has preached that God should “destroy” the enemies of Islam and that the Christians and Jews are “damned”;  Abdullah Hakim Quick, a preacher who has called upon God to “clean and purify Al-Aqsa from the filth of the Yahood [Jews]”; and the explicitly anti-gay preacher Omar Suleiman.

The Al Maghrib Institute is based in Texas but branches in the UK. In 2008, the ‘underwear’ bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attended seminars run in both London and Houston by Al Maghrib. Muhammad Al Shareef, the founder of the Al Maghrib Institute, has written a paper entitled, ‘Why the Jews Were Cursed’ – in which he claims that Jews control the media and murder prophets. He goes on to advise that Muslims should not “take Jews as our close allies.” Shareef also calls on Christians to “join the [Muslim] ranks and start to stand up and speak against things like this [homosexuality]…praise to God that you are homophobic.”

Yasir Qadhi is an extremist speaker with bigoted ideas who works for an openly anti-Jewish organisation. Judging by the record of the East London Mosque and  Islamic Forum of Europe when it comes to choice of speakers, however, Qadhi should fit right in.
