Hizb ut-Tahrir is an international Islamist organisation, founded in 1953, which seeks to abolish democracy and establish a global Islamic caliphate. According to Foreign Affairs, Hizb ut-Tahrir dominates the British Islamist scene, with around 8,500 members. It is legal in Britain, but illegal in Russia and widely proscribed across the Middle East, South Asia and Central Asia.
In the UK, however, the National Union of Students (NUS) has banned Hizb ut-Tahrir’s on-campus activities, accusing the group of being “responsible for supporting terrorism and publishing material that incites racial hatred.”
The Muslim anti-fundamentalist Quilliam Foundation describes Hizb ut-Tahrir as “a global movement which is dedicated to establishing a totalitarian state in which women and religious minorities would be systematically deprived of their basic human rights.”
Ex-member Majid Nawaz claims that the then-leader of Hizb ut-Tahrir UK Omar Bakri Muhammad encouraged members “to operate like street gangs … prowling London, fighting Indian Sikhs in the west and African Christians in the east … [and] intimidating Muslim women until they wore the hijab.”
According to Hizb ut-Tahrir’s “Draft Constitution” for a future Islamic caliphate, “Those who are guilty of apostasy (murtadd) from Islam are to be executed.” In its other literature, the group informs Muslims that, “as for jihad … it is legal, in fact it is an obligation … As God says, ‘Keep in store for them whatever you are capable of, force and equipment with which you can frighten those who are enemies of God and enemies of yourselves’.” The Heritage Foundation further notes:
In a June 2001 article published in the party’s journal, Hizb ideologists claim that all methods are justified in the struggle against the unbelievers, including murder. They specifically mention that a pilot’s diving a plane hit by enemy fire into a crowd of unbelievers without bailing out with a parachute is a legitimate form of armed struggle. Hizb also demands that Muslims come to the support of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
Hizb ut-Tahrir is openly anti-Semitic. An article on the group’s website says of Jews, “No one likes the Jews except the Jews … The American people do not like the Jews nor do the Europeans, because the Jews by their very nature do not like anyone else.” In 2010, a press release went further than merely insulting the Jewish people, calling for Muslims to “teach the Jews a lesson after which they will need no further lessons. March forth to fight them, eradicate their entity and purify the earth of their filth.”
