HSBC closes Ummah Welfare Trust bank account

The Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT), whose extremism and links to terrorism Stand for Peace has documented previously, announced this week that HSBC is to close the charity’s accounts. This action by HSBC comes six years after Barclays did the same in 2008.

The UWT is known to have given large sums of money to Interpal, a charity blacklisted as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” by the US Treasury Department for “provid[ing] support to Hamas.” It has also worked with the Al-Salah Islamic Association, described by the US Treasury Department as “one of the largest and best-funded Hamas charitable organisations in the Palestinian territories,” and which senior Hamas officials have confirmed is “identified with us.”

Events organised by the UWT has included such extremist guest speakers as Riyadh Ul Haq, who supports armed jihad and preaches contempt for Jews, Christians and Hindus; Ismail Menk, a Zimbabwean Islamist preacher who describes homosexuals as “filthy” and worse than “dogs and pigs”; and Suliman Gani, who has voiced support for convicted terrorist Aafia Siddiqui, described by FBI Director Robert S. Mueller as “an al-Qaeda operative and facilitator.”
