Interpal Trustee Essam Mustafa Feted by Hamas

Interpal Trustee Essam Mustafa Feted by Hamas

The Charity Commission has declared itself to be “satisfied” that Interpal has “put in place procedures for the selection, due diligence and monitoring of their partners and beneficiaries, so as to safeguard the charity’s funds.”[1]

Stand For Peace disputes this clean bill of health, having seen considerable evidence that Interpal still maintains significant connections with Hamas. Two YouTube videos from November and December 2013 show Interpal’s managing trustee, Essam Mustafa, with Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, during a visit to the Gaza Strip for the Miles of Smiles Convoy. In the first video, dated 23 November 2013, Mustafa can be seen exiting the same vehicle as Haniyeh, and the two are later pictured sitting together.[2]

In the second video, dated 3 December 2013, Mustafa and Haniyeh can again be seen together, this time clapping and singing.[3]

In a recent report, the Charity Commission expressed praise for Interpal after it claimed to have severed ties with the Union of Good, a coalition of charities established to manage Hamas’ finances.
[4][5] However, Stand For Peace can reveal that a Union of Good website, named Humanity Voice, has published several interviews with Essam Mustafa.[6]

On January 8, the website of Hamas’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, expressed its approval at the latest Interpal-managed convoy to arrive in Gaza, and stated:

The Governmental Committee against the Siege on Gaza said that Palestinian officials, including officials of the Foreign Ministry, welcomed convoy members, and thanked them for their ongoing humanitarian support.

The Miles of Smiles convoy, a regular convoy bringing aid to Gaza, has been used a means for Mustafa to remain closely involved with the Union of Good, and Hamas, and the convoys are often accompanied by pro-Hamas sentiment. For example, during a 2012 convoy, Mustafa joined Hamas leaders on a visit of the family homes of Hamas ‘martyrs’, including Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi, a senior Hamas leader who once stated: “We will kill Jews everywhere.”[7]

It seems unthinkable that the Charity Commission is satisfied Interpal is a responsible charity with responsible partners, when there is such clear evidence of close ties to the proscribed terrorist organisation Hamas.
