‘Jihad’ Preacher Greets New Converts
The Lewisham Islamic Centre is welcoming new converts to Islam with lessons taught by radical preacher Shakeel Begg.
Shakeel Begg, another radical cleric, recently urged students at Kingston University, southwest London, to wage jihad in Palestine. In a tape-recorded speech obtained by The Sunday Times, Begg, who is a Muslim chaplain at Goldsmiths College, part of London University, said: “You want to make jihad? Very good… Take some money and go to Palestine and fight, fight the terrorists, fight the Zionists.
Begg, who is the Imam of the Lewisham Islamic Centre as well as the Islamic chaplain at Goldsmiths, describes inmates at Guantanamo Bay as “inspiring”:
…and describes jihad as the “greatest of deeds”:
In May 2013, it emerged that both Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale, who were recently jailed for the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby, had attended the Lewisham Islamic Centre. The Centre has a long history of promoting extremist preachers. Its former Imam was Abu Zubair, who, reports the blog Harry’s Place, issued thinly veiled death threats to Usama Hasan for accepting and teaching evolution. In 2011, one of the speakers given a platform by the mosque was Muhammad Salih al-Munajjid, who encourages Muslims to express hatred of Jews and claims it is permissible for Muslims to rape female prisoners-of-war.
It is often remarked that converts to Islam are among the most willing recruits to the extremist narrative. With hate preachers like Shakeel Begg as their guide, and the Lewisham Islamic Centre as their institution, this problem is of little surprise.
