Neo-Nazis disrupt Warwick University lecture
– Colin Cortbus
A guest lecture by Professor Alex Callinicos at the University of Warwick was disrupted by neo-Nazi activists last month, Stand for Peace has learned.
An official of the West Midlands-based group National Action, whose official blog describes the Greek far-right Golden Dawn movement as “a perfect example of what we’d like to replicate,” wrote on the white supremacist forum Stormfront.org that “NA activists joined a contingent of students at [the] university … to disrupt and close down a talk being given by Marxist academic Alex Callinicos.”
Callinicos, a senior member of the far-left Socialist Workers Party whose father fought against the Nazi occupation of Greece during World War II, was also confronted at the University of Warwick by feminist students protesting the “rape apologism” of his party.
Other demonstrations held by National Action in recent times include draping a banner with the slogan “Anti-Racist is a Codeword for Anti-White” over a bridge in Birmingham, and a “flash mob” in Coventry during which members held aloft “National Action – National & Socialist” placards.
