Zacarias Moussaoui, who is currently serving a life sentence for his role in the September 11 attacks, attended South Bank from 1993-1995, earning a masters in International Business.
A 2012 report by Student Rights highlighted the fact that South Bank’s Islamic Society had been sharing videos of Anwar Al-Awlaki on its Facebook page. According to the report, Al-Awlaki was promoted on the account nine times between November 2011 and January 2012, and his videos elicited responses such as “so many lessons”. The material has subsequently been removed and the Society has posted a statement condemning extremism.
In January 2012, the South Bank Islamic Society hosted Murtaza Khan at an event called ‘The Reality of this Dunya’. Khan was filmed for a Channel 4 documentary describing Jews as “enemies” of Muslims, and has called homosexuality an ‘abominable action’ which should be punished by death. 
Haitham Al-Haddad appeared at South Bank Islamic Society’s annual dinner in 2009. Al-Haddad has referred to Jews as “the enemies of God, and the descendants of apes and pigs” and that Jews and Christian should be hated and avoided. He supports the death penalty for apostates and stated, “Muslims should rule the entire planet with this Islamic law”.
Dr Issa Chaer, a lecturer in the engineering faculty at South Bank, runs the Syrian Social Club, a regime supporter’s group. Chaer has appeared on Assad-friendly television channels, including Iranian station Press TV, to defend the regime.
