UKIM tours extremist clerics

UKIM tours extremist clerics

From 31 October to 2 November, UKIM Youth and Al Hikma Media are touring Yusuf Estes and Uthman Lateef around the UK, calling at Manchester, London and Birmingham. The tour, called “Discover Islam,” is sponsored by Interpal.

Yusuf Estes is an extremist. He is a “National Chaplain” for the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), a Saudi-funded NGO that finances terrorism all over the globe and promotes extreme anti-Semitic and anti-Shia literature. WAMY publications include “Animosity Toward the Jews,” which lists the reasons for Muslims to hate Jews, including, “The Jews are humanity’s enemies: they foment immorality in this world.” In 2003, Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin thanked WAMY for its financial support.

On homosexuals, Estes has written, “Scholars of Islam have already made it clear what the position is on those who engage in homosexual activities,” and then encourages his followers to read the following fatwa:

In order to maintain the purity of the Muslim society, most Muslim scholars have ruled that the punishment for this act should be the same as for zina (i.e. one hundred whiplashes for the man who has never married, and death by stoning for the married man). Some have even ruled that it should be death for both partners, because the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, said: “Kill the doer and the one to whom it was done.”

On women, Estes insists that “women do have a responsibility to obey their men, whether their fathers, brothers, husbands or even grown-up sons,” and instructs Muslim men with disobedient wives to “roll up a newspaper and give her a crack. Or take a yardstick, something like this, and you can hit [her].”

On apostates, Estes writes: “Those who seek to convert people away from Islam into other faiths or to destroy the Islamic government would naturally be considered as traitors and then dealt with as such.”

In the US, Estes founded and runs an Islamic TV station named GuideUS TV. The version of the Quran that it promotes, “The Noble Qur’an in the English Language” by Muhammad Taqi al-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan, has been described by Islam expert and Professor of Religion at San Diego State University Khaleel Mohammed as “more like a supremacist Muslim, anti-Semitic, anti-Christian polemic than a rendition of the Islamic scripture.” He gives the following example:

In the first sura … verses which are universally accepted as, “Guide us to the straight path, the path of those whom You have favored, not of those who have incurred Your wrath, nor of those who have gone astray” become, “Guide us to the Straight Way, the way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who have earned Your anger (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as the Christians).”

Uthman Lateef, who holds a Masters degree in “Crusader Studies” from Damascus University, advocates the violent destruction of the non-Muslim world and has expressed support for convicted terrorists. Lateef claims that the Dajjal [Anti-Christ] will be a Jew, who will lead 70,000 Jewish soldiers in an apocalyptic attempt to destroy the Muslim people.

In 2009, Lateef spoke on the same platform as the late Al Qaeda leader Anwar Awlaki at the London Muslim Centre (in 2011, Awlaki was killed in a U.S. drone strike).

Lateef is a vocal supporter of Muhammad Hamid, whom he describes as “our dear brother … locked up unfairly under false terror charges.” Hamid is a convicted “terrorist instructor” who is a serving a prison sentence after running military-style camps for would-be suicide bombers and other terrorists. Hamid, who called himself ‘Osama bin London’, was involved with the 2007 tube bombers as well as the Woolwich killer Michael Adebolajo.

The “Discover Islam” tour’s organisers, UKIM Youth and Al Hikma Media, both have extremist links. UKIM (the UK Islamic Mission) is the British branch of the South-East Asian Islamist movement Jamaat-e-Islami, which was responsible for acts of genocide and various other war crimes during the 1971 Bangladeshi War of Independence.

Al Hikma Media is described by the Daily Mail as “Islamist organisation … which has among its ranks a preacher called Shady Suleiman, known for condoning the killing of women who have sex before marriage.” According to the Gatestone Institute:

Al Hikma Media … [is] run by extreme preachers. These include: … Abdur Raheem Green, who speaks of a “Jewish stench” and claims that it is permissible to beat women to “bring them to goodness,” and Suhaib Webb. Webb, according to FBI surveillance documents, spoke at a dinner in 2001 alongside the late Al Qaeda operative Anwar Al-Awlaki, and raised £100,000 in donations for the legal defence of Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, an Islamist radical who shot and killed two police officers in Georgia, USA.

The British charity Interpal, which is sponsoring the tour, is listed by the US Treasury Department as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” for being one of several “charities that provide support to Hamas and form part of its funding network in Europe.” Its extensive links to Hamas have been documented by Stand for Peace.
