In December 2012, it was revealed that Bristol’s Christian Union would only allow women to teach at events if accompanied by their husbands.[1] This was implemented as an improvement on an earlier policy, which prohibited women from teaching at all.[2] The Christian Union at Bristol is part of the ultra-conservative Union and Colleges Christian Fellowship, which is prevented from operating on a number of campuses across the UK, including Birmingham and Exeter due to concerns over its equal opportunities policies. [3] [4] [5] Bristol’s Students’ Union released a statement promising that they would be “investigating the issue further in consultation with the groups involved. In particular we will be making certain that our Equality Policy is properly adhered to in all cases.”[6]

Bristol Islamic Society’s chosen charity for 2013/2014 is Islamic Relief, whose accounts revealed that it has made donations to and received donations from a significant number of organisations with links to terrorism.[7] [8]  For example, in 2004, 2007 and 2009, Islamic Relief received tens of thousands of pounds the Charitable Society for Social Welfare (CSSW), a charity founded by Al Qaeda terrorist Abdul Majeed Al-Zindani.[9] In 1998, the Al Qaeda terrorist Anwar Al-Awlaki, served as Vice President for CSSW’s San Diego branch.[10] Some of Islamic Relief’s trustees and directors have links to pro-terror groups and despotic regimes.[11]

Hamza Tzortzis spoke to Bristol’s Islamic Society in February 2012, in a talk called ‘Why Islam?’[12] Tzortzis has links to Hizb ut-Tahrir and has made statements such as, “Muslims reject the idea of freedom of speech and even the idea of freedom”.[13]

In February 2012, the Bristol Islamic Society hosted the Harun Yahya Conference, featuring lectures by Dr Oktar Babuna and Dr Turgut Aksu.[14] Adnan Oktar, aka Harun Yahya, is anti-Semitic, a Holocaust denier and has been accused of using sexual abuse and blackmail to achieve political leverage.[15] For example, one of his publications, ‘Persecution of Palestinians’, perpetuates anti-Semitic myths, which claim Israelis murder small children, and Israeli soldiers rape Arab women.[16]

Yvonne Ridley spoke at Bristol in 2007.[17] Ridley is a patron of Cageprisoners, an organisation which has aided al-Qaeda fighters, and whose director, Moazzam Begg, has admitted links to al-Qaeda training camps.[18] [19] She has referred to Chechen leader Shamil Basayev, who was responsible for the Beslan school siege, as a “martyr” and the leader of “an admirable struggle”.[20] She described Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s family “cowardly” for having denounced him.[21]
